09 Using Soundcloud for Podcast Hosting and RSS-02.png Using Soundcloud as a host for your podcast is a fairly new concept. Soundcloud is used more so to listen to music mixes from DJ's but they host a very extensive selection of spoken word audio. Major celebrities are hosting their podcasts on Soundcloud more and more if not to get the unlimited $99/year hosting, then to reach the millions of people using the platform. It's an amazing opportunity to get your podcast out there in front of people, get very cheap hosting, and even get a RSS feed to submit to iTunes or Stitcher.

Here on the AM Podcast Network we use both Soundcloud to host our audio, and we self-host our audio as well. So while we aren't necessarily getting the benefit of hosting on Soundcloud, it's perfect for us to reach a LOT of people! You can figure out what fits you best. If you are doing only 1 podcast then this might be the ticket for you. Soundcloud is fairly epic as far as potential in this niche. I highly recommend you read up on it and see if it fits your needs.

    Soundcloud RSS Feed

Soundcloud offers a RSS feed for spoken word podcast. It's a beta program so you have to apply to it by going here and reading the instructions, then filling out their form. The process took about 12 hours or so from when I applied to actually getting the feed. The Network's aggregate feed is sent to iTunes via this feed. We individually send each show's RSS feed via our self-hosted media. Which brings me to the next point.

You do not own your Soundcloud RSS feed. Let that sink in. Soundcloud provides this feed so they own it. So if you need to change platforms or find a different way to promote your stuff, you may have to change your RSS. You can always switch your RSS feed by asking Apple to help you. You should email them directly if you ever find you don't want to use Soundcloud as your RSS provider. From what I hear, they are pretty good about fixing things. Remember to give them the store URL and the feed of the old RSS and the new RSS. They should be able to fix you right up. In this regard, I look at using Soundcloud as an RSS feed not to worrisome.

It couldn't be easier to set this up if you go through their steps on getting setup and applying. Before you know it you will be spreading that feed through iTunes, Stitcher, and many other podcast directories! Don't be shy with Soundcloud. It makes sense and I personally love the service.
