Small Budget To Start A Podcast Show

I am always combing through the podcasting social media groups and it's a very normal thing to see many threads about having no money to buy equipment but they want to start a podcast show. Often, great advice comes in about buying microphones and what not on Amazon when it goes on sale. In fact, that's great advice, but I notice no one wants to tackle the the real topic.

Some people can hop into the podcast arena for $50 or less especially by using free services like SoundCloud, Archive.org, and other items like Audacity (Free) to record and edit. It doesn't actually take much to get into podcasting when you research your needs. You can even find used microphones, stands, or mobile recorders using services like Craigslist. It actually works very well, and I personally use it all the time.

The podcast community needs new people to come in and potentially change the norm and I for one want to see new shows succeed. Why not? I think it is still important to address the lack of investment that some continuously ask about.

Here is the list of what you need to do a great podcast show solo or co-hosted.
    • Microphone(s): I got a beautiful condenser mic on a Facebook flea market group. You can find even cheaper deals, but not too cheap. We need good audio. Get USB for solo.
    • XLR input or mixer if it's not a USB mic.
    • Audacity. Free and edits very well.
    • Computer: Hopefully you have this already.
    • Hosting: SoundCloud offers a free tier, this network will soon offer it too.
    • Artwork: You need some kind of artwork. Use Fiverr, SEO Clerks, and other cheap sites for something simple.
Really, podcasting is a very "low-barrier" media to jump in with success. Often the audio is great, easy to access, but the topic or discussion sucks. Some podcasts can do improv just fine, but most don't. Unless you think you are really all that and then some, build a script that has a point. This is the area that makes or breaks a show. You can have the best everything and find yourself with zero subscribers or negative reviews because your content is terrible.

I think it's important to realize that the biggest part of your show is free and can be low quality or high. This is why I say you can podcast with almost nothing and win big. People lose sight of this and consider a Friday night bullshit session in the garage Ep 3 of some show that I don't want to listen to.

So what can we do? Script your show and make it have a purpose. My episodes are typically a call to action so people leave the podcast episode looking for even more information. People for the most part dislike random conversation like morning zoo radio. I realize some get a decent listenership, but most don't. I have recently started to enjoy Joe Rogan's Experience podcast on YouTube and it is long. Like 2-3 hours long so bring a blanket and pillow.

Joe can do this because his content is real engaging and interesting. You learn things with it and being able to watch on YouTube or listen on the go is a double whammy. Look towards the shows that convinced you that you should podcast too and ask why. What made them encourage you to do it? I know mine is information. I am not looking for entertainment. I am looking for content that I can chew on. I am hungry for knowledge.

The overall point of this is that we have to stop waiting on the better mics or asking a thousand questions about how to start. I have written them many different ways already. You can podcast on a budget very easily. It's the content that is expensive, but that is in terms of time. Can you afford the time in creating content on a regular basis? If your answer is yes then by all means create away. Make it good otherwise it's all for nothing!

I sincerely wish you the best whether you are new to the podcast world or not.
