I love writing these. I feel as though it's unfiltered and not the talking heads that have been around for a long time telling everyone how they should podcast. I haven't been podcasting since 2004, actually I started podcasting in 2010. However, I started online marketing and web development in 2001. Really, that is what podcasting is actually all about. Marketing your audio and getting people to notice you. Wouldn't you like to do that right the first time? Good, I figured I would talk about what you do after you have your niche, your focus and hopefully the name of what you want to be the mouthpiece for.
The first thing I do before anything else after coming up with my niche and design goals is the logo. Nothing else is done until a logo is nailed down because it will drive everything from my style, my colors, and even the way I am perceived. It is that important. If you want to read more about logo's for podcasts then you are in luck. I have already written about logos for podcasts.
Alright, we now have the basics out of the way. Now let's talk about the BIG step you have to do next. NOPE, it's not record your show. It's build a website. You might think your podcast is all that matters. I have heard it all:
If you are willing to invest in a microphone, mixer, and everything else like learning Audacity then you better build a website. Just because it's a hobby doesn't mean it's off the table. It's required and I don't care who told you otherwise. If you are about to tell me that some Mastermind program you were in told you otherwise, I will tell you to stop reading and get off my website because I cant help you. No, no, don't leave...I was just being harsh for no reason. Get in here and let me set you straight. Here, relax and look at this graphic I made for you to illustrate my point.
- Adam, I just want to podcast for fun.
- Adam, I don't need a website, my show will be in iTunes.
- Adam, I don't know how to build a website.
- Adam, I don't like to write, I just like to talk.
- ...and other excuses I don't care about.
I don't care that you might sell advertising on your podcast show, in fact good for you if you do. I care about you getting off on the right foot and nothing says it better than a website that is useful and inviting that happens to have a podcast show on it. Notice how I said that. I didn't say a podcast show that happens to have a website. Your website gets done then you record shows and add wonderful content and build fans using social media. Its fun and exciting, but you have to focus on this part first. Your costs are minimal. If you are planning on paying for Libsyn or Soundcloud then you have money to spend. So get over to Godaddy and pay $10 for a domain and then purchase some shared hosting to build a website on.
Once you have the website, build 2 profiles on your favorite social media platforms. Also create a Youtube channel, and then thinking about advertising your website/show. I will discuss how to advertise properly on a future post. You probably have enough work to do anyways after reading this. Ok, stop reading, and before you share this with everyone you know listen to this below. Go ahead and click play to hear the audio rant of this post.
