Be More Than Just A Podcast

03 Be More Than Just a Podcast-02.png Are you just meeting the minimums in podcasting? By this, I mean just producing a show and maybe managing a facebook page or a twitter account. Many great people are and they never think much about going beyond where they are currently. I have spoken to many that want to but just never have the time or don't really know how to go about it. That's cool, and I totally get it. We can fix that though, and we can do it together.

We need to start with where we currently are, by this, I mean you. Do you have a show? How about 1-2 social media presences? Maybe a website? A YouTube channel? Those are the basics but there certainly are more possibilities to check off. You don't need all of them right now, however, you should at least think about it a little bit. After all, we want growth in whatever it is we are doing. A fisherman doesn't want to only fish in a small stream for the rest of his life, right?

So when we are thinking about expanding, we need to do it deliberately. You also need to choose what makes sense for your niche, experience, and your goals. Perhaps a podcast and a website is the right mix. Perhaps it's a Youtube channel and a podcast. In these examples you are starting with a compliment and growing horizontally. We don't want to grow vertically which would be starting a second podcast. We need to grow outward and reach more people.

Finding your audience is key in this as well. If you know your audience is not into YouTube then that wouldn't be a good fit. If your audience loves twitter, then that would be logical. How do you know what they like? Ask them. Your audience would be willing to tell you if you ask. You may have to do it a few times, but eventually you will be able to track them down and see where else they live on the internet.

Becoming a larger presence allows you new opportunities such as advertising money from multiple streams. It allows you to tap into new listeners by using more "traps". It also helps you become an authoritative figure in your niche. There is nothing but positives for your brand by getting bigger, except being able to manage it all. Don't worry though, practice makes perfect.

If you don't have the proper skills such as designing, editing, or coding then outsource it using freelance websites. If you know how but don't have the time, then you also should outsource it. The downside to outsourcing is that both of those cost money and you may have to wait a while before being able to do so. Remember though, you have to spend money to make money. You may get lucky and find someone with the talents you need to barter with. Maybe someone can edit for you and you can provide them something they need.

This is a primer to start the conversation of what is next. Never stop asking what more we can do.
